Teo disconnected the call and thought back on his friend’s words. Saul made it sound so easy — too easy. He wasn’t sure Marcy would forgive him.
Restlessness drove him to the beach. The sun had barely begun to set when Kekoa wandered down from the quiet house.
“Saul called back,” Kekoa informed him. The dark-haired wereshark came to a stop beside the pensive dragon. “He asked me to let you know that Marcy is staying with them for a time.”
“Good… That is… It is good.” Teo paced back and forth across the sun-warmed sand, torn by indecision. Of course she would go there. She and Chloe are close friends.
“Is everything, well?” Kekoa asked, brows knitted together.
“Y—no,” he answered truthfully. He wouldn’t insult Kekoa’s intelligence with a lie when his faithful servant had witnessed the final tense days of Marcy’s stay with his own eyes. “Marceline left me.”
“I am certain she only needs time to cool off,” Kekoa assured him. Teo wished he shared the sentiment.
“Do I call her, Kekoa?”
“Some words are better said face to face.”
“What if she has no wish to see me? She has been gone for many days without word.”
Kekoa chuckled, earning the dragon’s glare.
“I find nothing amusing about this,” Teo muttered.
“Forgive me, my friend.” Kekoa attempted to school his amused expression, but failed. Another chortle escaped. “It is a new side of you. A good one.”
“You think I am a fool,” Teo growled.
“No, I think you are a man in love. A dragon in love. It is new for you. Good, even.”
“It doesn’t feel good.” Teo kicked at the sand and turned his face into the salt-scented breeze. The cool air brushed against his cheeks and stirred his dark hair.
Each passing day without Marcy beside him was pain more than he could bear.
“If you truly wish to know how she feels, go to her,” Kekoa urged. “Look her in the eye and tell her what’s in your heart.”
“Saul said the same thing.”
Kekoa’s broad grin widened further. “Ha! I am wise as a dragon, then. Or he is as smart as a shark.”
Teo snorted and clapped his friend on the shoulder. “Very well, I will go to her.” And hope it is not too late to undo my foolishness.
